Sometimes, it pays to just pony up the cash for an extra baggage fee.

James McElvar, a singer in Scottish boy band Rewind, thought he was playing it smart on Wednesday when he decided to wear the contents of his luggage in order to avoid having to pay a baggage allowance fee while flying EasyJet from London to Glasgow with his band.

Unfortunately, the 19-year-old musician collapsed mid-flight, reportedly from heat exhaustion.

“I thought I was a goner and that I was having a heart attack,” he told The Sun. The BBC reports that paramedics reportedly told him that he was “lucky to be alive.”

It’s not entirely clear if the extra layers contributed to McElvar’s medical scare (he told The Sun that took off his extra clothes once he was on the plane) but the amount of items he managed to squeeze on is still pretty shocking. In addition to his regular outfit, the singer put on six t-shirts, five sweater, three pairs of jeans, two pairs of sweatpants, two jackets and two hats.

On Wednesday, the band’s official Twitter account confirmed that McElvar was recovering in a hospital in Glasgow.

“For everyone asking James is ok,” the band wrote. “He is being looked after in hospital now back home safe in Glasgow. He sends you all his love.”

On Thursday, the band reported that McElvar had fully recovered, although he was still in “shock.”

The band also shared a shot of McElvar in his airport ensemble, and we have to say it looks very familiar
