Tragic circumstances led to a dramatic rescue of a 4-year-old boy – all caught on video.

The Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team captured footage of their harrowing March 22 rescue of Jacob Spillers, trapped in the mudslide in the rural area outside of Oso, Wash.

Jacob was at home with his father and three siblings during the mudslide – sadly, they are all reportedly still listed as missing. His mother was at her job as a nursing assistant when she learned of the disaster. She found Jacob by calling local hospitals.

“Jacob told me he got out when nobody else was able to get out,” Jose Mangual told the Seattle Times, noting that Jacob was on the second floor of the house when the mud hit. Mangual is the father of Jacob’s half-brother Jovon, who is still reportedly missing.

The Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team was training 25 miles south at the time, and they made it to the scene quickly – Jacob was rescued only a few hours later.

The heart-rending video above shows the exact moment the rescuers pulled Jacob from the muck; he is one of eight rescued that day.

The official death toll rose to 16 on Wednesday, with the possibility of 24 dead once the other bodies are confirmed. Authorities are working off a list of 176 people unaccounted for, though some names are believed to be duplicates.
