Helen Nicklaus, 90, the mother of golfing champ Jack Nicklaus, died Wednesday after a lengthy illness. (She would have turned 91 on Monday, and specifics of her two-year illness were not released.) Her son was on the fourth hole of yesterday’s practice round of the PGA Championships in Louisville, Ky. After learning of his mother’s passing, he told the Associated Press, “I know her wish would be for me to stay here and play. I certainly would not want to not fulfill her last wishes, so I have decided to remain here and play in the PGA Championship.” Later, he sent word that he would not be playing today.
