Is a Hunger Games Theme Park on the Way?
Lionsgate is considering building a Hunger Games theme park. Could it be safe?
Hunger Games fans may soon be able to sample the dangers of Panem from the safety of a family-friendly theme park.
On a conference call Friday, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer announced that the studio was exploring the possibility of a theme park set in the sci-fi franchise’s dystopian future world.
No further details are known about the project, but given the YA series’ worldwide appeal and intense fan base – as well as the fact that The Wizarding World of Harry Potter proved the feasibility of a single-franchise theme park – we have to say, the odds of this plan coming to fruition seem ever in our favor.
Could a Hunger Games theme park work without the series’ trademark bloodbaths? We have a few ideas.
The Districts: Guests enter the park through an Epcot-style representation of the 12 Districts of Panem. (Not sure what those words mean? Click here for our Hunger Games glossary.) Each district offers its own attractions – customizable jewelry in District 1, seafood in District 4, the farms of District 9.
The Victory Tour: If you don’t want to walk around the Districts, you can hop on a monorail version of Katniss and Peeta’s Victory Tour, on which you’ll whiz by vistas of the 12 districts. But this isn’t a simple roller coaster ride; the track is fraught with the thick smoke from the coal mines of District 12, the falling trees of District 7, the salty air of District 4, all the way to the rainbow-hued, ostentatious architecture of the Capitol.
The Capitol: Just like the real Panem, the Hunger Games theme park will be centered on a lavish Capitol exhibit. Here visitors will find all manner of luxuries, as well as the following attractions:
Cinna’s Makeover Journey: An interactive virtual experience where park visitors can see how they would look with crazy-colored hair, skin and other extravagant Capitol-approved styles. After patrons are finished primping, they can debut their look for a platform of judges who will vote to sponsor (with gift certificates!) the one they like the best.
The Arena: Finally, visitors are directed to a fun, casualty-free version of the Hunger Games signature set piece. In the arena, fans compete against one another in a paintball-style battle simulation. Overhead, a handful of lucky guests can take an exhilarating ride on a hovercraft – named, of course, The Flight of the Mockingjay – and watch the action down below.
