People.com Celebrity Intruder Scares Seles By Stephen M. Silverman Published on June 11, 1998 12:00 AM Share Tweet Pin Email Tennis star Monica Seles, still stinging from a 1993 incident in Germany when an obsessed fan stabbed her in the back, was startled in Perth, Australia’s Burswood Dome yesterday when a male autograph seeker approached her from behind and tapped her on the shoulder, reports the Associated Press. The intruder, described as middle aged, reportedly was able to reach Seles as she was sitting courtside after her mixed-doubles match between the U.S. and Russia. (Final score was 2-1, in favor of the Americans.) Witnesses say the tennis star appeared shaken by the intrusion and immediately latched onto playing partner Jan-Michael Gambill, who then ushered her away. Security officers removed the man from the area, though later, tournament director Paul McNamee told the AP, he did receive Seles’s autograph.
