Inside MTV's Movie Awards
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes – who arrived on a motorcycle – get hands on backstage at the MTV Movie Awards on Saturday. Turning the tables on Cruise after he brought her out on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Holmes dragged her beau to the podium to present him with the first MTV Generation Award, a lifetime achievement honor.
Meanwhile, Cruise's ex, Nicole Kidman, greets fans outside the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The Bewitched star, who attended solo, presented the MTV Movie Award for breakthrough female performance to The Notebook star Rachel McAdams.
They like her, they really like her: Mean Girls star Lindsay Lohan (in Chanel) takes the MTV Movie Award for best female performance. The actress bested Oscar winner Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) and Natalie Portman (Garden State), among others. Lohan can thank her lucky charm – a miniature cat she carried in her handbag.
Newlyweds stars Jessica Simpson (in Gucci) and Nick Lachey "got ready together" for the show, Simpson said. Joked Lachey: "I did her hair – it took a little longer than usual, but I feel really good (about) how it came out." Lachey is in the process of having his own MTV reality show taped about the recording of his new album.
Newly engaged Paris Hilton and Paris Latsis cozy up at one of the night's hottest afterparties: Lindsay Lohan's soiree at The Standard.
Host Jimmy Fallon (onstage) did his best to get laughs – including grabbing presenter Sandra Bullock's chest. "I had a blast," Fallon said of his gig as the master of ceremonies. "This crowd came to party."
Mariah Carey, sporting more than 180 carats of Neil Lane diamonds (including 30-carat earrings worth more than $1 million), performs her 16th No. 1 single, "We Belong Together," off her hit album, The Emancipation of Mimi.
Nicole Richie, who hosted the preshow, puts the squeeze on fiancé Adam "DJ A.M." Goldstein at Lindsay Lohan's party. "I was nervous at first," Richie told PEOPLE of her hosting gig. "But once the actual celebrities are out there, you just let go with it. Everyone was really cool. I did dance moves with J.C. Chasez, and Daryl Hannah taught me a kung-fu move."
Eminem – who once feuded with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog – gets over his aversion to puppets and shares the stage with a mosh pit full of characters. The rapper performed a medley of "Ass Like That" and "Mockingbird" while wearing a T-shirt with a picture of ex-wife Kim and daughter Hailie (who star, via home movies, in the "Mockingbird" video).
DOWN WITH LOVE
Oscar winner Hilary Swank, who introduced a reunion of Breakfast Club cast members, chats backstage with Hitch star Eva Mendes. When asked by The Insider about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Swank, who is married to actor Chad Lowe, said, "I completely support people falling in love. I've been in love for 13 years."
DUKING IT OUT
Dukes of Hazzard costars Johnny Knoxville, Jessica Simpson and Seann William Scott triple-team to present the award for Best Musical Performance (Napoleon Dynamite's Jon Heder took the prize). Scott's favorite part of the evening? "Rachel (McAdams) just cleaned up," he told PEOPLE. "I got to present an award that she won for The Notebook for Best Kiss. I think she's adorable."
