Hours after a leaked video allegedly showing Nick Young admitting to cheating on fiancée Iggy Azalea went viral, the NBA star responded to the scandal at a press conference for the Los Angeles Lakers and the rapper let off steam on horseback.
The 25-year-old Australian was dressed in equestrian gear while riding on a private trail in Calabasas, California. Azalea, who owns and trains horses, also shared an Instagram photo from the outing, showing her posing between two of the beauties – including her own, Defender. She didn’t include a caption.
In the video at the center of the scandal – which was recorded by Young’s Los Angeles Lakers teammate D’Angelo Russell – Young, 30, responds to Russell’s questions about cheating on Azalea with other women without realizing he is being recorded.
Before Wednesday night’s Lakers game, Young and Russell spoke to the media about the video’s release.
“I don’t want to get into my personal life right now,” Young said in his appearance at the team’s press conference. “I think it’s best me and D’Angelo handle the situation we have in a private matter, outside of the media. I think it’s something we do need to sit down and talk about and that’s about it. What happened is what happened. We’ve got to work on it.”
Russell expressed regret over the situation.
“I feel as sick as possible … I wish I could make things better right away, but I can’t,” he said.
Russell, 20, was then asked if he believed that he put Young’s personal life and relationship with Azalea in jeopardy.
“Honestly I do,” he shared. “I’ve always been known as the guy that plays around a lot and he has been too, and to be around somebody with the same, similar characteristics is different. And he’s one of the guys that I’ve always talked to about anything and I cherished our friendship and for me to, I don’t know, have an incident like this come up and put it in jeopardy was not what I intended to do.”
Russell explained that he has apologized to Young.
“I’ve reached out to him, talked a little bit,” the NBA player said. “But, I let him know my apologies. I don’t know if they were accepted. I wouldn’t blame him [if he didn’t].”
Then he clarified that the video leak was not a prank.
“We joked around, played around all the time, say crazy things and this just got in the wrong hands,” said Russell. “It wasn’t a prank and it wasn’t something for everyone else to see. It was for my eyes, his eyes only – and that was it.”
Russell said that he is working to gain back the trust of his team.
“I’ve talked to a few players separately just to get their input on how to go about it,” he said. “At this point, the damage has been done. The best thing you can do is own up to it. That’s what I did – I owned up to it in full effect and am just taking what comes with it.”
The teammates’ tension caught the attention of Lakers fan Chris Rock, who shared a split image of the Lakers players via Instagram on Thursday. “These pros ain’t loyal,” wrote the comedian, 52, seemingly putting his own spin on the lyrics of Chris Brown‘s song “Loyal.”
Azalea appeared to be in good spirits after the horse ride Wednesday, responding to fans on social media. As rumors surrounding Young’s alleged infidelity swirled, the rapper shared her thoughts on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise, her upcoming appearance at Miami Beach Gay Pride and other topics unrelated to Young.
Azalea publicly reacted to the viral clip earlier on Wednesday, writing on Twitter, “Hmmm i see D Angelo Russell is trending… I actually liked his film. Thanks bro.”
Azalea and Young got engaged last June, and soon began wedding planning – an experience the basketball player joked about in an interview with Billboard published in January, calling it a “nightmare in its own.”
Despite being plagued by rumors of relationship strife in the months since, Azalea has brushed off any speculation. Last week, the singer addressed sexual harassment allegations brought against Young earlier this month.
“That’s part of being a basketball player,” Azalea told 92.3 AMP. “That’s part of being a basketball player. There’s always something.”
A rep for Azalea did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
