Howard Stern's Strange Bedfellows

Howard Stern’s badgering may have won him some unexpected results. The Associated Press reports that Shirley Jones and her husband, Marty Ingels, have parted ways with a conservative media watchdog group, citing an encounter with the shock jock. The former star of “The Partridge Family” resigned as honorary co-chairman of the Parents Television Council this week and Ingels was asked to resign as a member of the advisory board, Ingels said Wednesday. “We still agree with the aims of the PTC,” Ingels said, but he and his wife had reservations about the group’s approach to reducing sex, violence and profanity on TV.

  • Stern, whose late-night CBS-TV show has been a particular target of the PTC, confronted Jones and Ingels when they were guests on his radio show last Friday. “He kept asking, ‘Why would you want me thrown off the air?'” Ingels recalled. “He said we were going along with McCarthy tactics.” Afterward, Ingels said, his wife re-examined the shows given a negative appraisal by the PTC and found she disagreed with the group in many cases.
