For the "consciously uncoupled" Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, this year’s Valentine’s Day was about sun, surf and family.

Paltrow, 42, and Martin, 37, spent Saturday in Malibu with their children Apple, 10, and Moses, 8, along with several friends.

“Valentine’s Day was all about their kids. Gwyneth and Chris had planned a fun beach day for Apple and Moses,” a source tells PEOPLE.

“[They] spent several hours on the beach. Gwyneth and Chris were friendly, but they always are. Chris spent most of the time with the kids in the ocean, and Gwyneth stayed with friends on the beach. Chris even surfed with the kids. He is a great dad and very patient.”

The source says Paltrow returned alone to her Brentwood home that evening while the kids stayed behind with Martin in Malibu.

Meanwhile, Martin’s current flame, Jennifer Lawrence, was in Boston to work on a new movie, Joy, although filming has been postponed due to the snow.

So how did the star spend Valentine’s Day in the frosty city without her beau to snuggle up with? Another source tells PEOPLE Lawrence spent time with friends, enjoying a meal at Scampo restaurant.
