There’s nothing like going through one of the most difficult times of your life with someone else.

That’s exactly how Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani‘s friendship blossomed into a romance, sources tell PEOPLE.

“Both of them were very hurt and they went through similar situations,” says a source close to the Voice coaches, who both went through difficult divorces this summer (Shelton finalized his divorce from Miranda Lambert in July and Stefani announced her split from Gavin Rossdale in August).

“They were supportive of each other, and once her divorce was settled, it just changed the dynamic.”

While rumors of a romance first cropped up earlier this year, the duo didn’t start dating until about two weeks ago, says the source.

“Blake was always teasing her and joking with her and that evolved into flirting,” says the source. “Everyone is very happy for them.”

Adds a Stefani insider: “She truly seems happy now.”
