Hollywood's Dazzling Dozen
Versatility is key for Johansson, says PEOPLE style director Susan Kaufman of the 19-year-old ingenue: "She really likes to experiment and that's the fun of watching her." From couture to casual, the actress (appearing next in the comedy Synergy with Dennis Quaid) "can carry off a lot of the looks."
"She's super-glam, curvaceous, sexy, bling," says Kaufman of the MTV Video Music Award-winning singer (from left: elegant in gold; sporting a Tracy Reese skirt; wearing one of mom Tina's designs). Whether she's dressing up or down, Knowles, 22, works her figure: "She's given every woman with curves faith that you can look good with a booty."
The O.C.'s Barton is "the new Sarah Jessica Parker, because (her) show is the show everyone's looking to for style tips," says Kaufman. The 18-year-old actress (from left: in Prada; in a fun slipdress; in a Sass amp Bide shirt) is becoming a trendsetter off the set too: "It's not just a stylist dressing her."
Dunst, 22, is all about expressing her personal sense of style. "She's not putting on somebody else's clothes and changing her look," says Kaufman of the Wimbledon star (from left: in Chanel; in an asymmetrical cocktail dress; pairing a dress and leggings). "She's the fashion It girl for the cool, downtown set. You can tell she just has a great time shopping."
When it comes to fashion, Garden State's Portman (from left: in an Egyptian-style gown; retro in a '20s-flavored dress; in Zac Posen) just can't go wrong: "She can wear avant-garde, funkier things because she'll make anything look beautiful. It's her natural radiance that transcends the clothes," says Kaufman. No wonder Portman, 23, is a muse for Posen.
Even the most daring looks seems to work on the eclectic rapper-actress Eve, 25. And there's a reason why: The Barbershop 2 star "has confidence," says Kaufman. "She'd be the first to put on a pair of thigh-high boots and look good in them."
When it comes to "California, bohemian, hippie-girl style," Hudson, 25, is the reigning queen, says Kaufman. But the Raising Helen star (from left: in Versace; in a tunic and jeans; in a diaphanous top) also glows on the red carpet: "She can change into very high-fashion without looking overdone. She still keeps it natural."
"She's very sophisticated," says Kaufman of Danes, 25 (starring next in the upcoming indie Stage Beauty). "She represents that intellectual approach to dressing where it's simple, it's clean." Bright patterns and bold designs aren't for Danes (in classic Narciso Rodriguez), who instead makes "the case for not having to be flamboyant and not having to wear a million accessories."
Trends may come and go, but Vanity Fair star Witherspoon, 28, is "classic all the way," says Kaufman. "She's got a really great, clean sense of style." The actress (left, in Alberta Ferretti; right, mixing denim with a cropped jacket) favors designers like Valentino and Chanel, but "always the more tame looks."
Singer-actress Moore, 20, has a skill for showcasing her statuesque figure (left, in Calvin Klein; right, in Lanvin). "She can carry off clothes really well," says Kaufman of the Saved! star, who favors clothes with a "very minimalist style."
"You've got to love Jessica because she's like the human Barbie doll – you just want to dress her up," says Kaufman of the 24-year-old Newlyweds star, adding that Simpson is "the embodiment of the girlie-girl style."
Lohan, 18, is "having a good time and her clothes are reflecting that," says Kaufman of the Mean Girls star (from left: in a lacy minidress; wearing a Hermes belt and Gucci bag; in Stella McCartney pants). "She's really having fun with the trends but in an accessible, wearable way. She's most like the 'everygirl,' which is why so many people can relate to her."
