Another approach: Wear a sheer red gloss. DON'T: Make the rest of your makeup heavy. "It'll look very costume-y," says Gage. 02 of 07 TREND: JEWELED BARRETTES Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage; Cathy Berg/Kikapress DO: Be sure to place the sparklers (worn by Mariska Hargitay and Penelope Cruz) asymmetrically for a "sophisticated and modern" look, says Gage. For a fun substitute, use a brooch – a bobby pin can hold it in place. DON'T: Overdo your accessories. You don't want to distract from the barrettes, she says. 03 of 07 TREND: DOE EYES Vince Flores/CelebrityPhoto; P.Rideaux/PicturePerfect; Vlasic Slaven/GAMMA DO: "Draw out the corner of your eyeliner a little bit," says Gage. "You want to turn it up a little. Then lavish attention on your lashes" (as Mischa Barton, Eva Longoria and Ashley Olsen did). DON'T: Pair red lips with the heavily lined look. Instead, opt for a nude shade and a sheer shadow – it'll keep the focus on your eyes, she says. 04 of 07 TREND: HEADBANDS Dave Benett/Getty; Amy Graves/Fashion Wire Daily DO: Wear them with updos as an accent, says Gage, and go for "luxe fabrics like satin and velvet" (as seen on Sienna Miller and Sandra Bullock). DON'T: Push them all the way to the middle of your hair – "that's a schoolgirl look," says Gage. "You want to place them 1 to 2-1/2 inches back from the hairline." 05 of 07 TREND: SILVER EYESHADOW Peter Kramer/Getty; Rachid/Alfred/Bauer-Griffin; Thomas Lau/TLP DO: Use mascara for contrast. The shimmery shade (on Uma Thurman, Christina Aguilera and Ashanti) is "flattering on women of all skin tones because it's festive and sparkly on darker skin and ethereal and ice princess-y on fairer skin," says Gage. DON'T: Go overboard. Hold back from also using body and face shimmer, or you'll end up looking like "a Christmas tree with too much tinsel." 06 of 07 TREND: FLORAL HAIR ACCESSORIES Bill Davila/Startraksphoto; Lebon/GAMMA DO: "Look for them in wintry fabrics, like velvet." says Gage. The blooms can dress up hair in an unexpected way for the season (as on Paris Hilton and Hilary Duff). DON'T: "Wear flowers in your hair if you have flowers on your outfit. It's too much." 07 of 07 TREND: PURPLE EYESHADOW Axelle/Bauer-Griffin; Luis Martinez / AFF-USA; Dave Allocca/Startraksphoto DO: Use it as a liner or a wash of shadow. "Purple (on Rachel McAdams, Nicole Richie and Cameron Diaz) is flattering for every eye color," says Gage. But if you're timid about bright colors, she recommends using a cream shadow – it's more sheer. DON'T: "Put purple on your lower lashline," she says – unless you want to look stuck in the '80s.
