“Hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal” is one of those endlessly repeated cocktail party trivia bits, but we’ve never seen such a riveting real-world example in this (SFW) video.

Filmed on the Chobe River in Botswana by David Jackson, this clip shows one of the benign-looking semiaquatic beasts pursuing a speedboat with the intensity of a great white shark. Hippos are notoriously territorial, and this one apparently resented the intrusion of a Pangolin Photo Safari speedboat into its home.

The brief video escalates with the intensity of a scene from Jaws: We see something moving toward the boat, the boat accelerates, and then the hippo bursts out of the water in an appropriately slowed-down reveal.

Now, whenever someone repeats that bit about hippos to you, you can sagely nod and look off into middle distance, your 1,000-yard stare saying more about the things you’ve seen than words ever could.
