The Iowa caucuses may not be a first for second-time Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton – but it’s all new to her 16-month-old granddaughter, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky.

Charlotte’s mom, Chelsea Clinton, and grandma Hillary tell PEOPLE in an interview for this week’s issue that the little one is having a ball on her first campaign trip – without having to worry about any of the stump work!

Baby Charlotte and dad Marc Mezvinsky touched down in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday. Day 2 included a hotel-suite play date with Grandma, followed by a trip to the zoo.

“We just spent a couple of hours together this morning and it was just glorious,” Hillary tells PEOPLE of her time with Charlotte. “Could not have been better.”

But when the results of the Iowa caucuses come in late Monday night, Hillary’s granddaughter will be fast asleep.

“Charlotte will stay to her bedtime,” says her mom.

Charlotte’s grandfather Bill Clinton believes she has the power to influence the election – even from her crib.

The former president joked about Charlotte’s magical charm at a rally in Mason City, Iowa last Wednesday, saying to cheers and laughter from the crowd: “I firmly expect my 16-month-old granddaughter to be the difference in this whole election.”
