Hillary & Chelsea's Campaign Trail Scrapbook
On the campaign trail, "every day, I wear a locket with my daughter's picture in it," Chelsea tells PEOPLE of her good luck charm, which features 17-month-old Charlotte. "Just for life luck. Though I certainly hope it transfers to my mom!"
Hillary says caucus and primary nights are times for awaiting results with her family (at Lincoln High for their final Iowa rally) and old friends.
The Clinton ladies take a coffee break at Des Moines' Scenic Route Bakery during their time in the Midwest in early February.
If Mom makes it to the White House, what would Chelsea's role in D.C. be? "Whatever she wants to, whatever is best for her and her family," Hillary says. "She has a busy life."
"It is so important for people of all ages. They want a selfie, they really are waiting there and hoping," Hillary says. "And I have learned how to do them better. It's a part of politics. My only regret is that it replaces conversation on the rope line, what people are thinking or worried about. It does unnerve the Secret Service when somebody reaches for a selfie, so I can see why you might stop them when you're President. But until – I hope – that happens, I'm going to be selfie-ing."
Once the votes are in, "you go on to the next place," says Hillary. "You just keep moving forward."
"I have a bracelet that Bill gave me with a baby picture of Charlotte, which she loves to point at and say, "Baby!' " Hillary says of her good luck charm. "But I also carry around things that people have pressed into my hand that are important to them – a rosary, a Purple Heart medal. I get so much love and support from people that I meet for the first time."
"I'm certainly going to expect her to do her part according to her age and ability," Hillary says of Charlotte's future behavior. "But I also do have that grandmother feeling now because there’s just something about the idea that, omigosh, I want to make you really happy and want to see me – A. Lot. [Laughs] But. I do think fathers and grandfathers are maybe a little more susceptible, so they give a little more leeway. We'll have to keep Bill understanding that he's got to do what Charlotte’s mom tells him." Adds Chelsea, who's expecting her second child: "I like the sound of that."
