Staying on good terms with an ex is a possibility – just ask Helena Bonham Carter.

The Suffragette star may have ended her 13-year romance with ex Tim Burton in Dec. 2014, but the parents of two – who never married – are friendly as ever.

“I could write a thesis on what’s happened and it is all-absorbing when a relationship breaks down, but I think we’re coming through it,” Carter said in the Nov. issue of Red magazine.

“I think we’ll have something very precious still.”

Carter, 49, and Burton, 57, “separated amicably earlier in 2014 and have continued to be friends and co-parent their children,” her rep told PEOPLE exclusively at the time of their split.

Fast forward to the present, the actress remains positive about her future with the Beetlejuice director.

“Our relationship was always somewhat special, and I think it’ll always remain special. We did find each other. And really, the mark of a successful relationship shouldn’t be whether you’re there forever after. Sometimes you’re not meant to be forever together.”

The pair have two children, 12-year-old son Billy and 7-year-old daughter Nell.
