For an incorrigible optimist who never stopped believing in the power of art and love to change the world, Heavy D’s final public words couldn’t have been more fitting.

“BE INSPIRED!” the rapper wrote in his final Twitter post before his death Tuesday at age 44.

The brief, enthusiastic note is a strangely perfect epitaph for a man who used his Twitter account to broadcast endless messages of hope, love and encouragement to friends and strangers alike.

“Never stop believing.. Magic is just science we don’t understand.. Every original idea was considered insanity at first,” he wrote on Nov. 4. Three days before that, he wrote, “do something for someone today..might change their life.”

His single-sentence Twitter bio summed up his approach to life: “I have relentless optimism.”

Tributes have been pouring in for the much-loved rapper, who reportedly collapsed after walking up stairs at his Beverly Hills apartment building on Tuesday. He later died in the hospital.

Jennifer Lopez, MC Hammer, Diddy, LaToya Jackson, Brandy and Shaquille O’Neal are among those who have posted notes of remembrance about Heavy D to Twitter in the past day.
