Halle Berry: A Timeline of Her Ups, Downs & Rocky Romances
All hail the Queen! Halle Berry is crowned Miss Teen All-American in 1985, and as the runner-up for Miss USA the following year.
A STAR IS BORN
From pageants to the big screen, Berry gets her first major break in 1991 with a starring role in Jungle Fever. "I have to thank [Jungle Fever director] Spike Lee for putting me in my very first film and believing in me," Berry said in her 2002 Oscars acceptance speech.
A SAD SEPARATION
Berry marries pro baseball player David Justice in 1993, but the relationship ultimately ends in divorce in 1996. It was a traumatic time for Berry, who years later revealed she contemplated suicide following the demise of her marriage. "[My mother] sacrificed so much for her children, and to end my life would be an incredibly selfish thing to do. It was all about a relationship. My sense of worth was so low," Berry told Health in 2007. "I promised myself I would never be a coward again."
LOVE & MARRIAGE
The actress gets hitched a second time to singer Eric Benét in a secret beachfront ceremony in 2001.
AND THE OSCAR GOES TO ...
Berry makes history in 2002, becoming the first African-American woman to win a Best Actress Oscar for her role in Monster's Ball. "This moment is so much bigger than me," a crying Berry said when accepting her award on stage. "This is for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened."
BERRY GOES BOND
James Bond, meet Halle Berry. The star slips into an orange bikini for the coveted Bond girl role in 2002's Die Another Day. On what attracted her to the role, Berry said the character's confidence and intelligence became really appealing. "She was sure of her sexuality and knew how to use it, almost as a weapon."
A SECRET STRUGGLE
After two years of marriage, Berry and Benét separate in 2003, ultimately divorcing in 2005. The singer later confirmed that he had cheated on the Oscar winner, which led to a stint in sex-addiction rehab. "I'm not a sex addict," Benét told PEOPLE in 2005. "I wanted to save my marriage and do anything necessary to do that."
Shortly after meeting at a Versace photo shoot in 2005, Berry and French Canadian model Gabriel Aubry begin dating.
With a successful film career under her belt, Berry decides to put focus on a different dream: motherhood. "I've accomplished things I never thought I would," the star told Parade in 2007. "Now my sights are set on a different chapter in my life, which is motherhood. That's the goal I have very clearly set for myself." In 2008, Berry and Aubry welcome their first daughter, Nahla.
A BITTER BREAK-UP
Five years after their initial meeting, Berry and Aubry call it quits in 2010, which marks the beginning of a highly publicized custody battle that includes monthly child support negotiations and arguments stemming from Berry's desire to relocate to France with Nahla.
LOVE IS IN THE AIR
"I will never, never get married again," Berry told InStyle after her second divorce. But the actress goes back on her promise after meeting French actor Olivier Martinez in 2010. The two fall in love while filming Dark Tide in South Africa, and tie the knot in 2013.
A THANKSGIVING BRAWL
The drama is never far from over, as is the case for Martinez and Aubry on Thanksgiving Day 2012. The actor and model come to blows outside of Berry's Los Angeles residence, after a dispute surrounding Berry and Aubry's daughter Nahla. Both men are treated for injuries at a hospital following the brawl.
Alongside fellow actress Jennifer Garner, Berry (pregnant with Martinez's baby at the time) petitions in support of a bill that would protect celebrities' children from harassment by photographers. "My daughter doesn't want to go to school because she knows 'the men' are watching for her," Berry told the Assembly Committee on Public Safety. The bill passed and was made California law in 2013.
Berry welcomes her second child, a son named Maceo, with husband Martinez in 2013.
Halle Berry in New York in October 2014
After more than two years of marriage, Berry and Martinez call it quits in October 2015. "It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce," the couple says in a joint statement to PEOPLE. "We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus of what is best for our son. We wish each other nothing but happiness in life and we hope that you respect our and, most importantly, our children's privacy as we go through this difficult period."
