Gwyneth Talks Motherhood with Oprah

Paltrow says her baby's name, Apple, "conjured such a lovely picture for me"

Gwyneth Paltrow spilled all to Oprah Winfrey on Thursday – and the new mom said she still doesn’t understand the fuss over naming her daughter Apple.

The 31-year-old actress made her first television appearance since the birth of her daughter, Apple Blythe Alison Martin, as she talked about the joys of motherhood, her daughter’s name and her rocker husband, Chris Martin of Coldplay.

Martin suggested the name “Apple” soon after Paltrow discovered she was pregnant. “It conjured such a lovely picture for me – you know, apples are so sweet and they’re wholesome and it’s biblical – and I just thought it sounded so lovely and clean,” she told Oprah. “And I just thought, ‘Perfect!'”

Paltrow laughed at the fact that the name became such a hotly debated topic of conversation. “I found (that) surprising because there are people named Rose or Lily or Ivy or June or lots of pretty nouns,” she said.

The new mom says the overwhelming love one feels for a new baby is incredible. “It’s like a whole new dimension in emotion that I’ve never experienced. It’s crazy,” she said. Paltrow, who endured nearly three days of labor, says that 3-month-old Apple is starting to come into her own. “She’s very tranquil, she’s very placid and very aware,” she says.

Paltrow says that one of the biggest joys is seeing Apple interact with her father: “When her daddy walks in the room he’ll say, ‘Hello girls!’ and her little head’s trying to find his voice.”

Jude Law, who stars with Paltrow in the upcoming sci-fi flick Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, appeared on the show as well Thursday, and he treated the audience to some breakdancing moves.

Oprah also hosted a reunion of the jurors with whom she served in a Cook County murder case just a week earlier. Oprah and her peers convicted 27-year-old defendant Dion Coleman of first-degree murder.

Oprah’s fellow jurors were treated to lunch and then had their hair and makeup done for a discussion of the three-day trial on the show. She called the experience “one of the saddest” she has ever had.
