Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow have a famously friendly rapport as exes. And it sure comes in handy when calling in favors.

Case in point: Wednesday’s Inspiration Gala for the AIDS charity amfAR in Los Angeles, where Paltrow surprised the crowd by introducing Martin for an unannounced performance.

“This brilliant singer-songwriter has sold 8 million records, has won every single award that there is to be won, especially Father of the Year, which he has won consecutively since 2004,” Paltrow said. “I am speaking of Chris Martin and the incredibly talented Jonny Buckland, who together make up one-half of the legendary band Coldplay.”

Taking the stage at the Fiji-sponsored event, Martin then broke the ice with a joke.

“This is Justin Timberlake, and I am Justin Bieber, and together we are Bieber & Timberlake,” he told the audience, which included Rihanna, Kelly Osbourne, January Jones, Timberlake himself and many more.

After performing their hit “Paradise,” Martin continued to show off his comedic skills by commenting on the Tom Ford attire he and Buckland wore on stage.

“Tom Ford would not give us underpants, so both of us are going commando,” he told the audience, before closing out their set with “Viva la Vida.”

Martin and Paltrow’s closeness was a problem for Jennifer Lawrence when she dated the Coldplay singer, according to sources. But everyone else seems impressed by it, including Sharon Stone, who mentioned it in her speech Wednesday.

“We thank you for your inner and outer beauty,” Stone told Paltrow, “which you demonstrated by the fact that you get along with your ex-husband.”
