London’s most famous new parents left the Apple of their eye behind, to toast an artist with a cause, PEOPLE reports.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin joined friends, photographers and art-lovers on Thursday at a champagne reception for “The Innocents” at the Gagosian Gallery in London’s West End. The exhibit features photographs showing people who served time in jail for crimes they did not commit.

Paltrow called the photos inspiring, and gave kudos to her friend, New Yorker Taryn Simon. “I think Taryn’s one of the most talented photographers,” said the 31-year-old Oscar winner and recent mother of 1-month-old daughter Apple Blythe Alison Martin.

Her husband agreed. “It’s really a sad project,” remarked the Coldplay frontman, 27. “I mean, it’s amazing art, but it’s also really sad that it’s real.”

Even as Martin admired the art, the strains of fatherhood showed through. He confirmed that a stain on his shirt was most likely baby spit.

Chrissie Hynde liked the solitude of the men in the photos. “I don’t know anything about art,” said the Pretenders frontwoman, 52, “but I think that these pictures really capture that isolation.”
