Gwen Stefani‘s new album This Is What the Truth Feels Like is reigning at number one, but her journey to the top was a difficult one.

“I went through a real period of anger, but I felt like this song was almost like a forgiveness song,” she says in a new interview with Vanity Fair about her divorce and first single “Used to Love You,” written about Gavin Rossdale.

Asked if their issues included Stefani’s success surpassing Rossdale’s, the singer says she “always felt like I was a big star,” even when they first met.

“We played shows, people were there, we were good, and there was a lot of confidence in that. But because he was always touring, I was always touring, the most we ever spent together before we were married was like three weeks at a time.”

Now the star, 46, admits she’s “for sure” in love and focusing on the positive things in her life.

“God knows what’s going to happen,” Stefani said about her relationship with Blake Shelton. “But I feel like I’m in an amazing songwriting place; instead of being closed off, I’m thinking about positivity and how I can do something creative … now I don’t have to be insecure or write about heartache.”
