Gwen & Gavin Split: Saying Goodbye to Hollywood's Coolest Couple
Five years into marriage, Stefani tells England's The Observer that her relationship with Rossdale is "one of those mad love affairs that you can't live with and you can't live without, and you just keep going and going. It's just this ongoing saga. I'm interested to see what's going to happen next, you know?"
Despite their busy schedules, the two always make time for each other; here, Rossdale joins Stefani for a 2004 L.A. launch party for her solo debut, Love, Angel, Music, Baby.
NOT YOUR ORDINARY DATE NIGHT
At the 2006 American Music Awards, Rossdale supports his lady (about to release her solo album The Sweet Escape), and the pair proves why they often made PEOPLE's list of coolest couples, best-dressed couples, couples we'd most like to be …
OH BABY, BABY
It's parenthood that also makes this pair proud. Already mom and dad to son Kingston James McGregor at this point, the Rossdales step out at a Gucci bash just after sharing the news they're expecting a second child. Son Zuma Nesta Rock joins the family that August.
BLACK & GOLD
Cool is the name of the game for the couple, seen here at the 2010 Met Gala in N.Y.C. But Stefani is the first to admit their marriage is not as easy as it looks. "It's fun to get to this point," she shares with Vogue. "Because you learn so much about somebody. It's like these wars that go on and then you kind of get through to the other side, and it's like, 'Wow.' "
A fair pair, the couple and their kids spend a good chunk of time each year visiting Rossdale's family in England, where they were spotted on a smiley stroll in 2011. "Having kids takes the whole relationship to another place. It is the ultimate collaboration," Stefani shares. "Both of us have such strong opinions about how it should be, and it’s really fun to do it together."
A casual family day out in L.A. in January 2012 is Stefani's dream come true, she tells Marie Claire. "My biggest accomplishment is my marriage so far. Because it's hard, everyone knows it's hard. [It] is something that I always wanted to do successfully. It was a dream of mine."
ONE FOR THE ROAD
"No, I don't worry about [getting Gwen's red lipstick on me]," Rossdale once joked to Ryan Seacrest. "There's plenty of ways [to get it off] – soap and water is fine. It's all worth it!" Here, the couple practices what they preach on a PDA-packed 2012 trip to Palm Beach, Florida.
Obviously the coolest parents in the neighborhood, the Rossdales treat their sons to extra-special perks like the June 2013 Monsters University premiere. "The thing I'd like to do is enjoy these boys while they're young – so I don't regret I was working too much when they're big and don't want to cuddle with me anymore," she tells InStyle.
Stefani announces in a cute Insta post that the couple's third child will be another boy. She welcomes son Apollo Bowie Flynn on Feb. 28, 2014.
TWIST & SHOUT
"We go through so much together – it's a miracle that we could stay together this long," Stefani tells Cosmopolitan in 2015 (here, the stylish couple is snapped at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts Inaugural Gala in L.A., 2013). Her secret? "It's good to have those days when we both do our own things. I think that's what keeps relationships going, when both people can be themselves and have their own individuality."
"I never really saw myself landing a guy that hot," Stefani, here with Rossdale at a Vegas bash in April 2014, admits. "I don't know if I was a nerd in high school, but I definitely wasn't the super-cute cheerleader so I never saw myself getting somebody like that. But I do think he's quite handsome. It's not the most important thing about him, but it is nice." That year, he pops up frequently on her Instagram and joins her on The Voice as a mentor for Team Gwen.
IN & OUT
One of the couple's last major events together is the December 2014 PEOPLE Magazine Awards in L.A. Eight months later, on Aug. 1, 2015, news breaks that Stefani filed for divorce. "While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment," they tell PEOPLE in a statement.
