Jon and Kate Gosselin, plus their eight kids (one set of twins and sextuplets), burst onto the scene in 2007 with their mega-popular reality show, which chronicled their daily lives. KATE

These days, 38-year-old Kate, a registered nurse and former Dancing with the Stars contender, has primary custody of the children, and is releasing a cookbook and launching a coupon-code website to make ends meet.

MADY, 12

One of Jon and Kate's elder children, the budding actress isn't a fan of school but does love the stage. "Being on the Disney Channel, that's my dream," she tells PEOPLE.

CARA, 12

Mady's twin sis plays lacrosse and basketball, and earns straight A's. "My favorite subject is probably history," she says.

ALEXIS, 9

One of the sextuplets, Alexis keeps a menagerie of plastic animals (including a small horse) and hopes to one day "live on a ranch and study bugs."

HANNAH, 9

A budding artist who looks forward to "getting my braces off soon," Hannah wants to run a bakery someday "with my sister Leah."

However, Leah has some slightly different plans. "I want to teach little kids, and then I'll work in Hannah's bakery," the math whiz says.

Lightning fast, he wants to "run in the Olympics," he tells PEOPLE. Mom Kate boasts, "He can beat me in a sprint without even trying."

The onetime leader of the pack is now more laid-back. "His teacher says he's friends with everyone," Kate shares.

Once described by his dad as a "ladies' man," Joel still strives to be stylish. "I like looking good," he explains.

JON

The proud pop, now 36, lives about 30 minutes from Kate and the kids in a cabin in Berks County, Pa. The children visit him on Tuesday nights for dinner, as well as every other weekend, and he maintains "civil" text conversations with Kate over logistics and planning. He keeps busy with IT contract jobs and dabbles in sales with Advance Trade. "If a TV gig happens for me, great. If it happens for Kate, yay. In a recession you can't be choosy," he tells PEOPLE.
