Girl Power Loses to Boyz

Ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell looks to lose the battle for No. 1 on England’s pop charts after her debut single — her first as a solo since leaving the Spices — fell about 9,000 sales behind the Irish band Boyzone’s new release, “You Needed Me.” Halliwell (the former Ginger Spice) was hoping to reach the top spot with “Look at Me,” which she promoted with a lengthy campaign and massive TV exposure, says Britain’s Press Association. But unofficial mid-week figures put her at only at No. 2, with sales figures of 67,000 units, compared to Boyzone’s 76,000. The race is not completely over, however; Halliwell’s record company, EMI, is stepping up its promotion of the song this weekend.
