An unspecified malady keeps the star in L.A. instead of her London movie premiere

Sickness has caused Jennifer Lopez to lay low in Los Angeles instead of showing up for a London movie premiere and European press tour, she announced on Wednesday.

Lopez, 35, was due to appear with Richard Gere at Wednesday night’s British charity premiere of their movie Shall We Dance?, which benefited victims of the Dec. 26 Asian tsunami.

When Gere showed up, he told reporters: “She wasn’t feeling well. She couldn’t get on the plane.” Asked what was wrong with his costar, the actor, 55, replied: “She’s got the flu, or something.”

In a statement released by her rep, Lopez said: “I very much wanted to be in London today but unfortunately I’m not well. At the advice of my doctors I’m unable to travel. Being sick has also caused me to cancel my European album tour.”

Without specifying her malady, Lopez, who belted out a duet with husband Marc Anthony at Sunday’s Grammys, added: “Please accept my sincerest apologies as I have to remain in Los Angeles.”

Peter Chelsom, the director of the Shall We Dance? (which was a critical and commercial disappointment in the U.S.), showed fatherly concern towards his absentee star. “She’s been doing too much,” he said. “She’s very sorry. It’s a real shame.”
