Street performers are a dime a dozen around Southern California’s Venice Beach area, but one violin player hit just the right notes for Gerard Butler on Sunday.

Sources tell PEOPLE that the actor spent much of the day on L.A.’s west side, attending a private Haiti benefit in Santa Monica before hitting Venice Beach with a couple of pals.

At the end of the night, heading back to his car, Butler stopped to chat with a woman who had recognized him while playing violin outside on the street. After talking for only a few moments, the two began making out.

After a few smooches, Butler left and returned home to his Los Feliz house alone. It’s unclear if he did the right thing upon leaving and threw a few dollars into the woman’s violin case for her trouble.

Butler is set to star in The Bounty Hunter, due out in March. He costars with Jennifer Aniston, with whom he spent much of the Golden Globes weekend – but who wasn’t spotted on the boardwalk this particular night.
