How are George and Amal Clooney celebrating their first year of marriage?

Much the same way they do everything else: Looking fabulous together while heading to a romantic meal.

The Clooneys stepped out Friday night for sushi at Asanebo in Studio City, California, just two days before their Sept. 27 wedding anniversary at the Aman Canal Grande luxury resort in Venice, Italy.

“All I know is that it sort of changed everything in terms of what I thought my future – my personal future – was going to be,” George, 54, told PEOPLE in May of how his relationship with Amal, the 37-year-old human rights lawyer, affected how he saw the future.

“I wasn’t always completely optimistic about how it was going to work out personally for me,” he added then. “But now I am.”

Though George, a longtime bachelor, finally tied the knot last year, neither he nor Amal have settled down, instead staying busy with their respective careers in Hollywood and on the international stage – and jet-setting around the world.

A waiter described the scene at one lunch stop, San Donato in Poggio, Italy, in July, telling PEOPLE: “It sounds cheesy because he really is a movie star, but they looked like a scene out of a romantic movie. Both incredibly good-looking.

“She was elegant in all her movements. They kept holding hands and leaning in for a kiss.”

Amal is back in California after traveling to the Maldives for a high-profile (and dangerous) case, where she is defending former president Mohamed Nasheed.

George, meanwhile, is in town to attend the memorial service for friend and Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub. The actor-turned-director will speak at the service, which takes place on George’s anniversary on Sunday.
