That’s a surefire way to charm your future mother-in-law.

George Clooney entertained his fiancée’s mother, Baria Alamuddin, at his villa on Lake Como, Italy, over the weekend, and the visit was a success, a source tells PEOPLE.

“They were outside, and Amal and her mom were smiling,” the source says. “It was going pretty great.”

“Amal’s mom left the next day, and at the airport they just looked so happy.”

Prior to her mom’s visit, Amal Alamuddin, 36, got to spend some alone-time with the actor, 53. The pair headed to dinner at hotel Villa D’Este in Cernobbio Village, arriving via boat taxi. The couple walked in holding hands, with Alamuddin wearing a chic white shift dress and carrying a fun black clutch with long fringe.

“George and Amal looked very much in love all weekend,” the source says. “They were all smiles, holding hands. There was an air of romance.”

The pair are expected to tie the knot during a September ceremony somewhere secluded in Italy, another source told PEOPLE in May.
