Frey Details Relationship with Peterson

Scott's call to Amber, taped by police, is played in the courtroom Wednesday

Scott Peterson’s former mistress, Amber Frey, continued her testimony in his double-murder trial Wednesday, confirming that she helped police record her phone calls beginning on New Year’s Eve 2002 – the day she discovered that Peterson was not only married, but suspected in the Christmas Eve disappearance of his pregnant wife, Laci.

In a call recorded by police and played in court, Peterson pretended to Frey, whom he called “sweetie,” that he was in Paris, standing near the Eiffel Tower as fireworks were exploding, reports the Associated Press.

Asked by Frey if he had planned any New Year’s resolutions, Peterson answered no. Pressing along, Frey then asked, “So what, do you want to be together with me?”

“Well, I mean, obviously … I think that we, you know, would be wonderful together,” Peterson replied. “You know, in my mind we could be wonderful together and I could … I could care for you in any and every way. For the rest of our lives.”

Frey, the prosecution’s star witness, said that her relationship with the former fertilizer salesman quickly blossomed from sex to a serious relationship. A massage therapist and a single mother, Frey almost immediately trusted Peterson with her young daughter and said he offered to raise her as his own.

Frey’s testimony about the intensity of their early relationship appeared to counter one aspect of Peterson’s defense, that a man would not murder his pregnant wife to be with a single mother he had just met.

But Frey said that from the beginning, Peterson seemed to want a future with her. On their second date, Dec. 9, 2002, Scott told Frey he had lied about never being married, she testified. Then, she said, he began to cry and told her “he had lost his wife.”

“He said this would be the first holidays he would be spending without her,” she said.

At the time, Frey said she understood Peterson to mean that his wife was dead. “I thanked him for sharing that with me,” she said, adding that she asked him if he still wanted to have a serious relationship with her.

“He said, Absolutely,” she said.
