Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is “surrounded by family” as he battles cancer at a Canadian hospital, his office revealed.

Ford, who made international news for his zany antics after admitting he smoked crack cocaine, was forced to drop his re-election bid after doctors found a tumor in his abdomen in 2014.

“With his family beside him, Councillor Ford is currently in hospital as he continues his battle against cancer,” according to a statement released to Canadian media by his chief of staff.

“The Ford family asks for privacy during this difficult time, and thank the people of Toronto and around the world for their ongoing prayers and support.”

Ford’s chief of staff, Dan Jacobs, later clarified that he released the statement in response to rumors that Ford had died.

Norm Kelly, who served as Ford’s deputy mayor, sent out a tweet on Thursday night asking supporters to “Please keep Rob Ford in your prayers tonight.”
