The former Miss Spain has come out as a lesbian, reportedly making her the first openly gay national beauty queen.

Patricia Yurena Rodréguez, who took home the country’s crown in 2008 and 2013, posted a photo in bed with her girlfriend, DJ Vanesa Cortes, on Aug. 19.

“Romeo and Julliet,” she captioned the intimate Instagram, which has garnered nearly 7,000 likes.

The 24-year-old defended her decision to La Opinién de Tenerife, telling the newspaper in Spanish, “I do not regret what I did because I’m thrilled with what is happening to me.”

Rodréguez was also the runner-up at Miss Universe 2013 in Moscow – the same year the competition caused controversy because of Russia’s anti-gay laws. The pageant has also gotten into hot water in the past for trying to ban a transgender contestant.

On Thursday, she posted another Instagram thanking fans for their supportive comments.
