Parents in Pennsylvania are furious after at least five students at Monessen Middle School were purportedly given word search puzzles based on the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

The puzzle included terms like “spanking,” “bondage” and “intercourse.” District officials are investigating the incident after at least one parent complained about it on Tuesday evening at the district’s board meeting, Trib Total Media reports.

One father told WTAE that a school employee handed the puzzles out. “I asked my son who passed it out, and he said the teacher passed it out,” James Carter said. “I don’t think this is what they should be doing in the 8th grade level.”

Carter said that he went to the school on Tuesday to confront the principal about the so-called assignment, but was denied a meeting after he insisted on recording it.

So he went to the board instead, who told him the issue was a “personnel and student matter,” and as such they couldn’t comment on what had happened.

“The district learned of this [on Monday] and is trying to gather all the facts so it can be treated fairly and expeditiously,” school board solicitor John Toohey said after the meeting, Trib Total Media reports.

Monessen Middle School did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
