Fergie and Josh Duhamel may look like the perfect couple but they’ve been through tough times.

Nine months into their marriage in 2009, reps for the couple denied that he had an affair with an Atlanta stripper during a one-night stand.

“It was difficult,” Fergie tells Oprah Winfrey in an upcoming episode of OWN’s Oprah’s Next Chapter, airing Oct. 21.

“When you go through difficult times it – it really makes you stronger as a unit, as a partnership. It does for us anyways. Our love today is a deeper love,” Fergie continues. “Definitely we’re strong today because of anything difficult that’s happened with us. We deal with it. We communicate. Communicating is the most important thing.”

But it’s not the only thing. Duhamel admitted to Oprah that he was initially attracted to Fergie because of “how sexy she was and the hotness.”

Still, he says, “We haven’t been together for nine years because of that.”

Instead, Duhamel and Fergie – who hope to have kids one day – work as a couple because, he says, “we grew up in very similar ways, you know?”

“My mother was a teacher. Both of her parents were teachers. We both had to work for what we got. We’re both Catholic,” he says. “There were a lot of things that were really compatible between us. But at the end of the day, she’s just an amazing girl.”
