In her new book My Journey, fashion designer Donna Karan gets candid about having an abortion in the ’70s.

Karan sat down it HuffPost Live on Friday and didn’t shy away from discussing personal details about her book and decision to terminate the pregnancy.

The designer was married to Mark Karan, but having an affair with artist Stephan Weiss at the time she became pregnant and admits they “weren’t sure whose child it was.”

“It’s difficult, but that was the life I was living at that moment in time,” Karan, 67, said. “I said, ‘I can’t fathom doing this,’ and abortion had just been legalized – it was that week.”

“I told Mark about it and I said, ‘I really think this is what I have to do, and he agreed with me and supported me completely on it.”

While Karan said it was “wonderful” to have husband at the time and her mother support her through the process, she, herself, wants to be able to connect with other woman who face the tough decision.

“I know so many times that women really go, ‘What do I do? How do I handle this?’ and I wanted to show that I’m with them,” she said. “I totally understand what it’s like – I went through it.”
