Asked to describe his wife, actress and mother-to-be Erinn Bartlett, Oliver Hudson happily tells PEOPLE, “She’s beautifully pregnant.”

Hudson, who stars on CBS’s Rules of Engagement, calls the prospect of being a father “amazing! The whole process has been incredible. We’ve got a little bit longer and a little baby pops out and then it’s going to take on a whole new life. I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be.”

That includes not knowing the gender of the child. “We don’t know,” says Hudson, who is the brother of Kate Hudson and the son of Goldie Hawn. “We’re going to wait [to learn]. Things are great! [We] couldn’t be happier.”

Since the news came in March that Hudson, 30, and Bartlett, 34, were having a baby, “She’s labeled me the houseboy,” says the actor. “I pretty much cater to her every need, whether it be rubbing her back, her feet or, in this case now she’s so big, even picking up a pen, if she drops a pen, because she can’t [bend over and] get it.”

As far as the routine goes at their house, Hudson says, “Just as I settle in to watch some TV, I hear. ‘Oliver, I need some ‘ ”

And when it comes to practicing child-rearing on his nephew, Kate Hudson’s 3-year-old son Ryder, (by former husband Chris Robinson), Hudson says: “I’ve always loved kids. I mean, as an uncle, though, you’re more of a spoiler, so you don’t have to do the dirty work. You can just have a good time.”
