Motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel — who ended his stunt career in 1981 — is in stable condition after receiving a long-awaited liver transplant. At the family’s request, no further details were released, not even when the transplant was performed, Tampa General Hospital spokesman John Dunn said Wednesday. Knievel, 60, has hepatitis C, which he believes he contracted from one of the many blood transfusions he needed following spectacular crashes on the daredevil circuit in the 1960s and 1970s. The disease destroyed his liver. Knievel announced in April that he needed a transplant, and he was hospitalized earlier this month with dehydration while awaiting a donor.
