Ben Affleck made a surprise appearance – wearing his wedding ring – at the ESPYs in Los Angeles on Wednesday to present retired New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter with the Icon Award.
“If you’re from Boston you always wanted to hate our next honoree,” said the Bean Town-bred actor, 42, who announced last month that he and wife Jennifer Garner would be divorcing after 10 years of marriage.
“There was something about him that made the boos ring a little hollow,” said Affleck of Jeter, 41. “Maybe it was his inimitable class, maybe it was he won with dignity and loss with grace, maybe it was simply that we knew, no matter what, he was a winner regardless.”
Along with his ring, which Affleck is wearing to symbolize his and Garner’s dedication to their three children, the Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice star presented the award in a dark suit.
“He broke my heart a hundred times, if not more,” Affleck said of Jeter during his speech. “He broke it again when he retired because he was absolutely one of the very best to ever play the game of baseball. So to you, Derek Jeter, I tip my hat and thank you for every last moment of your incredible career.”

This is not the first public appearance for Affleck, who stopped by last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con to support Batman vs. Superman.
Beyond the spotlight, Affleck has spent much of his time since the June 30 announcement “playing Mr. Mom,” a source told PEOPLE. “As difficult as [the divorce] is, from what we’ve seen, it’s pretty amicable.”
