Ugly Betty star and new dad Eric Mabius is getting less beauty sleep than usual these days.

“We take turns sleeping,” the actor, 37, with wife Ivy Sherman, told PEOPLE at Sunday’s Broadway opening of the London import God of Carnage, starring James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden. “Some nights we get sleep, most nights we don’t.”

Mabius and Sherman have two sons, 2½-year-old Maxfield Elliot and Rylan Jaxson, who is 3 months old.

Though Mabius – who plays fashion editor Daniel Meade on the ABC hit – claims Vanessa Williams is the go-to Ugly Betty cast member for parenting advice, he seems to be doing well enough on his own in his role as daddy, judging by his toddler’s progress.

“He never forgets anything,” says an incredulous Mabius. “I take him down to the promenade, and he says, ‘Is that the Staten Island Ferry, Dad?’ He s 2½ years old!”
