Eminem's Divorce Finalized – Again

The rapper and Kim Mathers, who were married twice, reach an out-of-court settlement

Eminem and Kimberley Mathers are divorced – again, a lawyer for Mathers confirms to PEOPLE.

The couple, who have been married to each other twice, reached an out-of-court settlement during a hearing at Macomb County Circuit Court on Tuesday. The pair agreed to share custody of their daughter, Hailie Jade Scott, who turns 11 on Christmas Day.

Kim’s attorney, Michael J. Smith, also said that “a property settlement was accepted,” but would not disclose details of the agreement. Kim had been seeking financial support and attorney fees from the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III.

“Kim is doing great,” said Smith. “She is a very articulate, very smart woman. She is going back to college to study design. She just wants to be a mom and go back to college. That’s what she wants to do right now.”

During Tuesday’s hearing, the couple “conducted themselves with dignity and respect,” Chief Judge Antonio P. Viviano told The Detroit Free Press, which was first to report the couple’s divorce had been finalized.

Smith agreed with the judge’s assessment saying, “They always conduct themselves with respect. It’s personal to them. It’s hard for them.” (Eminem declined to comment after the hearing.)

Eminem, 34, and Kim, 31, were married on Jan. 14 for the second time. Less than three months later, the rapper filed for divorce. Their first marriage lasted from 1999 to 2001.

Smith said that despite being divorced twice, the rapper and his ex will not likely disappear from each other’s lives completely.

“There was a lot of sadness about why this didn’t work out. They’ve been together for 17 years,” he said. “They’re life-long friends, lovers, have been husband and wife, they’re raising children together… It’s not the end and it’s not over between them..”

In addition to Hailie Jade, the couple adopted Kim’s niece Alaina, 12. Kim also has a daughter, Whitney, 3, from a previous relationship.
