A source says the ABC News anchor and her estranged husband split months ago
Despite the recent revelation that Elizabeth Vargas returned to rehab this week to battle alcohol addiction, a source says the ABC News anchor, 51, and singer-songwriter husband Marc Cohn parted ways months before this relapse.
“They agreed to split last winter and it’s very amicable,” the source says of the couple’s pending divorce. On Wednesday, PEOPLE exclusively revealed that the couple separated after 12 years of marriage.
Last November, Vargas publicly addressed her addiction for the first time. This week Cohn, 55, expressed his well wishes, saying in an exclusive statement, “On behalf of Elizabeth’s family, we are in total support of her recovery and want her to be well.”
Vargas has said she regrets letting her family (including sons Zachary, 11, and Samuel, 8) down with this most recent setback. With their relationship behind them, she and Cohn are now focused on parenting. “Both parties are devoted parents,” says the source, “and are committed to putting the boys first.”
