The couple spend two days together in her hometown of Tresnuraghes, in Sardinia
Nothing like spending a little time with mom and dad: This week brought George Clooney and girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis on a private jet from Milan to the airport of Alghero on the island of Sardinia – where an SUV took them, along with Canalis’s father Casare and one of Clooney’s bodyguards, to the small town of Trenuraghes, perched on the hills overlooking the coast and home to Elisabetta’s parents.
Tresnuraghes (pop. 1,200) is Cesare Canalis’s birthplace and where Elisabetta spent her first 18 years, before pursuing a modeling career in Milan. Cesare, a radiologist, and wife Bruna, a homemaker, live in the middle of town, in a three-bedroom, three-bathroom, two-story white house.
On Wednesday, the first day of their visit, one of Elisabetta’s uncles organized a family luncheon at his house in honor of the couple. After the family reunion came a quick car tour of local scenic sites.
That evening, Clooney, Canalis and her parents went for a quiet dinner in a local haunt known for Sardinian specialties, La rosa dei venti. Owner Gianluca Del Rio the local paper afterward that the meal consisted of homemade gnocchi with meat sauce and ravioli with vegetables, followed by sea bass and the local Cannonau white wine.
Before his visit ended on the second day, Clooney patiently signed autographs and posed for photos with neighbors of the Canalises’. Several greeted the star like an old relative, exchanging many hugs and kisses, and one even handed Clooney a baby for a picture. As one neighbor told a local journalist: “He looked rather awkward with the 7-month infant in his arms, but he posed politely and carefully handed the baby back.”
As the neighbor also noted: “One of the older women there shouted, ‘Ora tocca a te!’ [’It’s your turn now!’]. Clooney obviously didn’t understand, but everyone turned to look at Elisabetta. She simply smiled.”
