It’s not all engagement news this holiday: Singer John Mellencamp and wife Elaine have decided to separate after 18 years of marriage.
They “are proud of their 20 years together and are very happy with their accomplishments both as parents and as a family,” according to the statement Mellencamp’s spokesperson Bob Merlis gave The Hollywood Reporter. “They will continue to raise their two children in Indiana but have decided to call it a day as a couple.”
The pair met in 1991 when then 23-year-old supermodel Elaine Irwin was hired by photographer Wayne Maser to pose for the cover of Mellencamp’s Whenever We Wanted album. The couple were engaged 10 weeks later and wed the following September at Mellencamp’s uncle’s log cabin in Indiana.
Irwin is Mellencamp’s third wife. No reason has been given for the split.
