Eddie Murphy: Fat's in the Fire

“Beverly Hills Cop” and “Dr. Dolittle,” move over. “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps,” starring Eddie Murphy gave the star his biggest opening ever. Actually, make that “their” biggest opening ever, as Murphy stars as six characters — most of them plump — in the comedy sequel to his 1996 hit. Meanwhile, another movie to debut, “Thomas and the Magic Railroad,” with Alec Baldwin and his friend Thomas the Tank Engine, proved sluggish. Or should that be “chuggish”? Perhaps Murphy should have hopped onboard. The weekend’s Top 10, according to industry estimates:

  • 1. “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps,” $42.7 million
    2. “What Lies Beneath,” $22 million
    3. “X-Men,” $11.5 million
    4. “Scary Movie,” $8.1 million
    5. “The Perfect Storm,” $7 million
    6. “Pokemon the Movie 2000,” $6.3 million
    7. “Disney’s The Kid,” $5.1 million
    8. “The Patriot,” $4.6 million
    9. “Thomas and the Magic Railroad,” $4.2 million
    10. “Chicken Run,” $3.4 million
