One year in and the marriage between Miami Heat superstar Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union is not perfect – which is part of what makes it so relatable, Wade told PEOPLE.

“I think the one thing is, we are imperfect, just like every couple in the world,” he said Friday night at the celebration of his Ocean Drive Magazine cover story at StripSteak by Michael Mina at Fontainebleau Miami Beach. “We stick together through it all – through the great times, through the bad times.”

“You can get behind love, and you can get behind someone who is not deemed as perfect, you know,” Wade, 33, continued, looking suave in an Adrian Sauvage suit and Saint Laurent sneakers. “‘Okay, they make mistakes just like we make mistakes, and this is how they figure it out – they still love each other and they keep going the next day.’ ”

After a rush of positive fan feedback from PEOPLE’s exclusive reveal of the couple’s wedding video preview, questions again arose about whether the twosome would reconsider the idea of having their own reality show.

“I hope not … we don t have a lot of privacy as it is,” Wade joked.

That’s not to say we’ll never see the pair on the big screen.

“People talked about, ‘Oh wow, this would be a great rom-com,’ and we thought, ‘Yeah, it would be pretty cool,’ ” Wade said. “So you never know what s to come …. maybe a rom-com, I’m with that!”

Union, 42, attending in support of her husband, looked gorgeous in a colorful Rochas skirt, backless blouse and Saint Laurent Heels.

As for the couple’s home life, Wade is (and isn’t) just like every other parent in America: His teenage children from a previous relationship – son Zaire and nephew Dahveon, both 13 – think he’s cool. But not too cool.

“Things like this help me!” Wade said, pointing to his Ocean Drive cover. “There are people cooler than me in the world for sure, but it keeps me somewhere in there.”

So who tops the boys’ list?

“Steph Curry. He’s the coolest one in our house,” Wade said.
