Celebrity Dr. Laura vs. Canadian Censors By Stef Mcdonald Published on September 21, 1998 12:00 AM Share Tweet Pin Email Radio talk show host Laura Schlessinger, no stranger to controversy in the U.S., now faces trouble across the border. The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council ruled that her “unremittingly heavy-handed and unambiguously negative characterization” of gays is in violation of Canadian industry codes on human rights, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Canadian TV and radio stations are judged by standards for ethics, violence and sexual content. “In Canada, we respect freedom of speech but do not worship it,” a spokesperson for the CBSC said. Previously, Howard Stern’s radio show was singled out by Canadian censors. In March, Dr. Laura apologized on her radio show for saying homosexuality was “deviant.” Hundreds of protestors have picketed Paramount Pictures, which plans to produce a syndicated TV show with Dr. Laura in the fall.
