Real Housewives of New York City stars Ramona Singer and Dorinda Medley tell us the secrets to their friendship's survival

Few people know the ups and downs of friendship the way Ramona Singer and Dorinda Medley do – and they know exactly what it takes to get through it all.

The Real Housewives of New York City besties talked to PEOPLE Now about how they get through the rough times, specifically all those blowout fights seen on the show.

“Talking, communicating,” Medley, 54, told PEOPLE Now. “Keeping an open dialogue, understanding the bigger picture, which is one of the problems I was having with Luann.”

Medley has been feuding with co-star Luann de Lesseps, 53, throughout the current season of RHONY. “We all make mistakes,” she added. “We’re all not perfect.”

Singer, 62, who has been on the show since the inaugural season, backed up her friend, saying, “Sometimes you just vent, and say things you don’t want to say. And then you go, Oh my God, I am so sorry, I wasn’t thinking straight.”

“And then you get a little closer,” Medley concluded. The two have had frequent fights throughout their time on the show, which Medley joined in the seventh season. The reality show is currently in its 11th season, and features Singer, Medley, Lesseps, Bethenny Frankel, Sonja Morgan and Tinsley Mortimer.

The Real Housewives of New York City airs every Wednesday at 9 p.m. on Bravo.
