Joe DiMaggio’s lawyer denied reports by two TV stations that the Hall of Famer had a heart attack last week and is battling lung cancer. “This is totally false,” Morris Engelberg said Tuesday after stations in New York and Miami reported that the Yankee Clipper’s condition had worsened. “Mr. DiMaggio and his family heard this information on the television and were very upset,” said Engelberg. The former New York Yankee baseball player will mark his 84th birthday Wednesday in a Florida hospital “with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, some of the hospital staff, his brother, Dom, myself and a few close friends,” Engelberg said. In a statement the lawyer went on to say that DiMaggio had advised Engelberg to no longer discuss his health condition with anyone other than his doctors and his immediate family.

  • ESPN reported Tuesday that DiMaggio’s condition had improved enough for him to be removed from life support but that his health was so poor last week following the heart attack that he was given last rites.
