Dick Clark: 40 Years of New Year's Rockin' Eve
1979: RICK JAMES
Rick James first hit the stage of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve in 1979, the show's seventh consecutive year on the air. He made two more appearances in the '80s, memorably performing "Superfreak" in 1982.
1984: BOY GEORGE
In the wake of their chart-topping sophomore album, Colour by Numbers, Boy George and Culture Club rocked Los Angeles with "Karma Chameleon."
1986: NEW YORK
Hands up! Host-with-the-most Clark took time out to mingle with the crowds during the 1986 broadcast, which saw couple Wayne and Vicki Chew marrying on-air.
1986: THE JUDDS
Mother-daughter duo Naomi and Wynonna Judd – aka the Judds – introduced the Rockin' Eve audience to their country stylings with performances of "Rockin' with the Rhythm" and "Have Mercy."
1987: SMOKEY ROBINSON
With his career back on track, William "Smokey" Robinson kicked off the New Year by belting out "Because of You" and "Love Will Set You Free" from Los Angeles; that same year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In a rare appearance sans signature makeup and costumes, KISS still managed to bring down the house with "Rock and Roll All Nite" and "Makin' Love."
1998: SPICE GIRLS
Clark got a taste of Ginger (Geri Halliwell), Scary (Melanie Brown), Sporty (Melanie Chisholm), Baby (Emma Bunton) and Posh (Victoria Beckham) when the Spice Girls capped off the success of their second album, Spiceworld, with a trio of performances on Rockin' Eve.
2005: BILLY IDOL
No shirt, no problem! Billy Idol let out a rebel yell while performing "White Wedding" and "Scream" from Rockin' Eve's L.A. base.
2006: MARIAH CAREY
2009: TAYLOR, LIONEL, THE JOBROS & DEMI
2010: BLACK EYED PEAS
Taking on double duty as host and entertainer, Fergie emceed the Las Vegas portion of Rockin' Eve before hitting the stage with Black Eyed Peas bandmates Taboo, Will.i.am and apl.de.ap to perform "Rock that Body."
