Diane Kruger and Norman Reedus’ romance has gone public — and their history goes way back.

The actors were seen holding hands on a stroll in New York City Tuesday night and even sharing a sweet kiss after goofing off with a passerby. But it’s not the first time they’ve been spotted hanging out — Kruger and Reedus have been friends for years.

The two met while filming the 2015 movie Sky, in which Kruger’s character embarks on a journey of self-discovery after leaving her husband and hooking up with Reedus’ character. “I didn’t know [Reedus] before the film,” Kruger told PEOPLE at the time. “We share a lot of intimate scenes. I was really nervous about meeting him and not being able to have a drink with him, or talk with him.”

But Kruger, 40, said she was “pleasantly surprised” with Reedus, 48, and that he is nothing like the “dude” characters he tends to play: “He’s so relaxed. He’s really easygoing, very gentle.”

Kruger and Reedus then promoted the film together, often appearing at events alongside Joshua Jackson, Kruger’s longtime boyfriend at the time who also costarred in the movie. Reedus shared a shot on his Instagram of the two of them at the Toronto Film Festival, where the movie was screened. Earlier, he had also posted another picture with Kruger in which he called her “the prettiest of co stars.”

Rumors then started to swirl about a romantic connection between the two, including an alleged sighting during which they were seen getting cozy at a bar in New York City in December 2015.

A year later, and a few months after her July 2016 split from Jackson, Kruger and Reedus were seen together in December 2016 when the German actress supported the Walking Dead actor at his photography exhibition opening in Paris. The exhibition showcased photographs from Reedus’ book, The Sun’s Coming Up… Like a Big Bald Head at Galerie Hors-Champs.

Two months after the opening, the pair were spotted returning to New York City the weekend after Valentine’s Day from an out-of-town trip, and moving things out of Reedus’ sports car. They were in high spirits and seemed to be having a great time as Kruger smiled at Reedus while she grabbed bags out of the silver car.
